"The artwork I produce is defined as a ‘Popbang’, a friendly explosion
of colour. Popbang first originated in 2004 and is process that
describes how I effectively use colour. Through my artwork I use a
number of key themes this being vehicles, toys and mass produced
objects.
I thrive on process. Using everyday mass-produced recognisable objects
to create artworks that are unique, bespoke and elicit a reaction from
the viewer. All the artwork I produce has a sense of fun about it and is
intended to be easily accessible by all this can be interpreted by using
toys.
As I am trained as a painter I see the sculptures I create as
three-dimensional paintings. The aesthetic appearance of the piece is
more important than final form created. Quirky and unique ideas are
powerful and can have an instant impact in today’s throwaway society.
This year I have been creating Popbang sculptures out of recycled,
reclaimed and found objects continuing my interest of using
mass-produced objects. The sculptures are constructed without any glue
or fastenings; the process reflects the idea of recycling and being
environmentally friendly. A harsh contrast to that of the sculpture made
out of toy cars. The Sculptures that I created are now on display in
thestudio’s atrium bar and lounge in Birmingham City Centre.
More recently I have developed ‘Popbang - auto drawings’ an art form of
creating paintings using radio control cars. I use the toy cars to
create paintings on large format paper. Again these can be viewed along
with my original colour wheels from September 2008 at thestudio."
